Which is best to learn, Latin of Greek?
Hi there.
I've just spent some time online and found it most interesting how English comes from Latin and Greek and I'd like very much to learn more about these languages, maybe even get to speak them one day. But I know that Latin is a dying langauge which is pretty sad all things considered. So, what do you reacon? Is Greek easier to learn? Should I try finding a Latin teacher? Or am I simply wasting my time? Thanks everyone.

I say Latin, if only because so many languages come from it. If you learned Latin, then chances are learning another language would be that much easier and faster. Even if it’s a dead language, it still has its purpose, especially if you’re interested in certain fields such as medicine. Good luck
personally i would learn latin. languages all around have root words based off of it. in the future this would make it easier to learn other languages. but i also think that THAT greek (ancient greek) is different then the one spoken today…like a more modernized version.
my mom took latin and i think greek but found latin was much more helpful.
Why bother learning a dead language?
So I’d go with Greek
Greek atleast it is not a dead language and you can speak it with people.
English is also originated partly from German too.
Latin I think is pretty cool despite it being a dead language. However, i suggest you do both. But start with Latin. Greek is a bit easier – it’s an entirely different alphabet, but once you get the hang of it, reading Greek becomes easy and you pick up on what words mean.
I’m learning Greek right now. In the beginning, i thought i’d never get it, but now it’s gotten easier.
But yeah, learn both. But start with Latin because it’s harder and majority of words have Latin roots – so maybe Greek will come easy after learning Latin
Latin would be the best stepping stone since we have so many words with Latin roots. The grammar for either is going to be comparably difficult, but the vocab for Latin will be easier.
I hate it when people say Latin is a dead. As a spoken, evolving language, it is dead, but as a language itself, it’s immortal. After 2000 years, the world still knows of it, reads and writes in it–more so than Ancient Greek dialects. Classical Latin will survive long into the future.
Not much conversation in either takes place, but reading and writing still do. There’s a Finnish news broadcast online with news reported in Classical Latin. There’s a lot more Ancient Greek to read, but still quite a bit of Classical Latin.
Greek is not easier but its defenately more helpfull.Latin is dead, Greek is still in use.
After all Greek is the richest language
