Do people really not know the difference between the Latin language and Latin America?

Sorry if I seem snarky. It's just that I've seen people respond to questions asking about Latin translations in Spanish(usually very bad Spanish at that).
Um, just to clarify. I KNOW THE DIFFERENCE.
Thanks winarabbit. I'm taking Latin this semester(took it for 2 years in high school, picking it up again). I've always been fascinated by the language and ancient Roman culture, so I guess that's why this annoys me so.

Oh yes, people confuse the two all the time.
The other day some gal was telling me she wanted to get two tattoos–the Latin words for "strength" and "weakness." I asked her why Latin. She said, "Oh, just to piss off all those Latin people."
I was like, "Latin speakers? [It's a dead language, as you know.] Classics majors? Latin Americans?" She had no answer, just looked at me like I was trying to baffle her for no reason.
But anyway, yeah, I run into this ridiculous confusion of the Latin and Spanish languages way more often than is comfortable.
Latin Am is part of a country in S. Am, Latin is an ancient romance language.
As I know it, the Latin language is the language that was used and sometimes now is used by the Catholic church, Rome, Italy, the Pope and in the old way of saying the Mass.
Latin America is a totally different place, and they are Spanish speaking people.
I wouldn’t be surprised! Someone just responded to another on here that her Puerto Rican friend couldn’t be President of the U.S. because he had to be born a citizen to be eligible! Once, when I was interviewing for another teaching position, the pastor read on my resume that I was chairman of Language Arts in my previous school. He asked what languages I taught there and thought we taught Latin. So, there are many people who don’t have a clue but don’t have a problem voicing their ignorance. ("Snarky" I like that!)
first of all Latin is a language, and Latin America refers to the spanish speaking countries of north and south america…. of course u know that but i dont know why u would ask it….
I thought people learned to differentiate the two in sixth grade!! I don’t think Hispanics should be called Latin/Latino, anyway. There’s no justification for it. But if you need any Latin translations, I’m your girl.

Sadly, this is quite true for many. Also, many people in the US think that everyone who speaks Spanish is Mexican. Scary that so many think like that, huh?
