I'm taking Latin 1 in my sophmore year in high school and I wanted to know if it was good to know since im going into the medical field. Yes I know it's a dead language but I heard many other languages formed from Latin and that there are many medical terms in the Latin language.

Why is it common among Hispanics to say that their language is Latin per se as the Romans in Europe?

I came across it a few years ago and I thought it was amazing! It was invented by some man and put online. It is very easy for a person with knowledge of two or three latin based languages to understand.

I've heard about William the Conqueror's invasion bringing the then-current French language to Britain, but what about the fact that the Romans occupied Britain? In other words, what percent of the Latin in English came from the occupation of Rome, and what percent came from the Norman conquest?

Seems so strange that the most powerful empire's language, which spread all the way to Scotland, Israel, and Asia Minor would just become extinct...
It would be like the English Language dying. Maybe it will...who knows.
But anyways, i will never understand how a language that had so much influence in the known world, which is the basis of so many other languages, could just DIE. Many other languages have died, but they are isolated pockets..know what i mean? So strange, and illogical, at least to my amateur mind.

songs with serious or something like a sacred theme usually have their lyrics in Latin.. like those found on movies and some orchestral concerts.
so what's so special about this language that song writers often use it?

Hundred years ago the most common language was Latin, Greek is even older than latin and was less popular, but it didn't die, Latin died and from it were born other languages. Greek evolved from ancient Greek. But HOW did Greek not disappear as Latin did?
Could you explain to me the process during history that made Greek be preserved through the years up now?
Thanks in advance

Generally we wouldn't be able to know a word of the language unless it was taught to someone and they were able to translate it for all. Latin is still taught all over the place and we know it, so how is it a "dead language?"

I am looking into learning a third language. I am a German major. There are not many options for an over the summer introductory course in a foreign language. Is Latin difficult? I have heard it's tough. Is it a language you could see someone learning the beginning basics with effort in a one month time span?

yea...I figured slim.
welcome to my headache.
I thought about making a whole new language (just for one set of people)
But that sounds time consuming, and I really am not up to it.
I'm tried of thinking about this. My brain hurts.
Tips on what I could do here?
Thanks in advance =)
JO,
I won't have to worry about the narrator. She is a human from Earth. I'm just stuck on the native people on the planet =)

Sorry if I seem snarky. It's just that I've seen people respond to questions asking about Latin translations in Spanish(usually very bad Spanish at that).
Um, just to clarify. I KNOW THE DIFFERENCE.
Thanks winarabbit. I'm taking Latin this semester(took it for 2 years in high school, picking it up again). I've always been fascinated by the language and ancient Roman culture, so I guess that's why this annoys me so.

All of modern day English finds it's origins in either Latin or Greek. What language was the biggest influence on our language today? Latin or Greek?
